Cold calling statistics from 2024 to 2026 data say the average rep connects on about 5% of dials and needs roughly 370 to 400 dials to book one meeting. Top-quartile reps connect on 13.3% and need about 45.
Below are the numbers we could check on each publisher’s own page, grouped by theme: connect rates, dials per meeting, timing, the call itself, buyer preference and mobile numbers. Each carries its source, year and sample, followed by our own dial counts and a worked example of a realistic calling day.
What do cold calling statistics say in 2026?
Cold calling still books meetings, but at a low rate per dial: about one meeting per 370 to 400 dials for an average caller, and one per 45 for the best quarter of reps. The gap between those two callers is far bigger than any difference between years or datasets.
Two rates drive that gap: how often a dial reaches the buyer, and how often a conversation turns into a meeting. The sections below show where each number comes from, so you can compare your team with a source that counts the same way.

How we chose these cold calling statistics
Every statistic on this page was read on the publisher’s own page or PDF, not copied from a roundup. Last reviewed: 28 September 2026.
- Source rules. Each number names its publisher, year and sample, with a link. Data from before 2020 is labeled with its year.
- Who publishes. Most B2B cold calling statistics come from dialer and call-recording vendors (Gong, Orum, Nooks) or from agencies (Belkins, Cognism with WHAM). It describes their users or their own reps, not a random sample of all B2B calls.
- Definitions. A “connect” at Gong is a call answered by the prospect; at Belkins it is any live human, gatekeepers included. A “conversation” at Orum is a call over one minute. A “success rate” at Cognism is the share of conversations that booked a meeting. Compare numbers only when the definitions match.
- Left out. Popular numbers with no traceable primary source are listed further down, with what the original source actually says.
Cold call connect rate statistics
Published cold call connect rates run from about 2% to 13% of dials, depending on who is dialing and what counts as a connect.
| Statistic | Source, year | Sample |
|---|---|---|
| 5.4% of dials connect for the average rep; 13.3% for the top quartile | Gong, 2024 | 300M+ cold calls |
| 5.35% of dials connected across the platform in 2023 | Orum, 2024 | All 2023 calls on Orum |
| 9.9% of dials reach a live human, gatekeepers included | Belkins, 2026 (2025 data) | 175,000+ dials by its SDRs |
| 24.5% of prospects connect at least once, over about 3 dials each | Belkins, 2026 (2025 data) | Same dataset |
| 1.9% median connect rate on sequenced dialer calls and 2.9% on other calls; 4.8% and 8.9% for the top quartile | Gong Engage, 2024 data | SDR dialer calls |
Gong Engage counts a call only when the rep logs an outcome, so its rates run below Gong’s 5.4%. Belkins’ 24.5% is per prospect, not per dial: calling each person about three times reaches one in four.
For the definitions side by side and connect rates by number type, see our cold call connect rate benchmarks.
For the DACH market, Cremanski & Company’s analysis of cold calling as a RevOps success factor (in German) covers the legal rules in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, plus a 90-day case where a SaaS team lifted its connect rate from 4% to 9%.
How many cold calls it takes to book a meeting
At average rates it takes about 370 to 402 dials to book one meeting from cold calls; a top-quartile rep needs about 45.
| Statistic | Source, year | Sample |
|---|---|---|
| About 402 dials per meeting for the average rep; about 45 for the top quartile | Gong guide, 2024 | 300M+ cold calls |
| 4.6% of connects book a meeting for the average rep; 16.7% for the top quartile | Gong, 2024 | 300M+ cold calls |
| About 370 dials per meeting: 9.9% connect, 58% of connects become conversations, 4.6% of conversations book | Belkins, 2026 (2025 data) | 175,000+ dials |
| 12% of conversations over one minute booked a meeting in 2024, up from 11% all-time | Orum, 2025 | 3M conversations, nearly 500,000 meetings |
| 2.7% cold calling success rate (conversations that booked a meeting), up from 2.3% a year earlier | Cognism with WHAM data, 2026 | 200K+ calls |
Gong’s 402 is derived from its two rates: 1 ÷ (5.4% × 4.6%). Belkins’ 370 comes from a different team with a broader connect definition, and lands close.

Over 800 dials a month, Gong’s average rep books about 2 meetings and a top-quartile rep about 18. Neither the year nor the vendor moves the number as much as the caller does.
Best time to cold call: hour, day and attempt statistics
Connect rates peak around 10 AM, Tuesday and Wednesday book the most demos in one large dataset, and almost every conversation happens by the third attempt.
- Hour. Gong’s connect rate peaks at 8% for calls placed at 10 AM, against 5.5% at 8 AM and 6% at 6 PM (300M+ calls, 2024; the time zone basis is not stated). Orum’s 2024 data also peaks at 10 AM local time.
- Day. Tuesday and Wednesday produced 44% of all demos booked from more than 1.4 million outbound calls, and Tuesday had the highest connect rate (ZoomInfo, 2026). Monday had the best call-to-demo rate, 1.19%, on lower volume. Cognism’s 2026 report ranks Thursday first, then Tuesday, so treat the day as something to test.
- Attempts. 93% of conversations happened by call 3, and five calls captured 98.6% (Cognism with WHAM data, 2025 report). The 2026 report says it now takes 1.55 calls on average to reach a prospect, down from 2.9.
- Volume. SDRs on phone-centric teams average 56 dials and 4.6 quality conversations a day; on email-centric teams, 28 dials and 3.4 (The Bridge Group, 2025 survey of 351 B2B companies).

For windows by region and time zone, see the best time to cold call.
What happens on the call: length, objections and voicemail
The average cold call lasts 82 seconds, while calls that book a meeting run about 3.7 to 6 minutes on average across Belkins, Gong and Orum.
- All calls. The average cold call lasts 82 seconds (Cognism with WHAM data, 2026 report), down from 93 seconds in the 2025 report.
- Calls that book. On Orum, a call that books a meeting lasts about six minutes and one that doesn’t lasts under 60 seconds (2024 data). Belkins’ meeting-booking calls averaged 3.7 minutes (2025 data), and Gong’s 2024 guide gives a median of 4.8 minutes for successful calls.
- Talk time. In Gong’s older research, successful calls averaged 5 minutes 50 seconds against 3 minutes 14 seconds for connected calls that did not book, and reps talked 55% of the time on successful calls (Gong, 100k calls, first published 2018).

Objections are concentrated: the top 5 make up 74% of all cold call objections in Gong’s analysis of 300M+ calls. Dismissive brush-offs are 49.5% of all objections, situational ones 42.6% and “we already have a solution” 7.9% (Gong, 2024).

Word-for-word answers to each of them: cold calling objections and what to say.
Voicemail cuts both ways. Leaving one raised email reply rates from 2.73% to 5.87%, but contacts who got a voicemail connected on 5.17% of later dials against 7.18% for other calls. After 3 or more voicemails, the email reply rate fell to 2.2% (Gong, 2024). What to say when you do leave one: sales voicemail scripts.
Do buyers still take cold calls?
Yes, most do: 69% of buyers in RAIN Group’s survey had accepted a call from a provider they had not worked with in the past 12 months, and 79% from existing or previous providers.
- Time given. 56% of buyers give a new provider 5 to 10 minutes on the phone to prove value.
- Seniority. 57% of C-level and VP buyers choose phone as a preferred contact method, against 51% of directors and 47% of managers.
- Phone vs email. Across all buyers, 49% choose phone and 80% choose email (a multi-select question). Tech buyers choose phone at 54%, financial services at 40%. Only 21% choose voicemail.
These numbers come from RAIN Group’s Top Performance in Sales Prospecting (2018; 488 buyers and 489 sellers). It is the most-cited buyer survey on cold calls, and it is old: use it as a direction, not a current rate.

Mobile numbers vs office lines and switchboards
Mobile numbers connect 45% more often than non-mobile numbers, and calls that go through a front desk book fewer meetings.
- Mobile lift. In nearly 3 million dials, mobile numbers had a 45% higher connect rate than non-mobile numbers, and those conversations turned into meetings 18% more often (Nooks, 2025).
- By buyer. Finance professionals were 148% more likely to answer on a mobile than on another line, and marketing 128% (Nooks).
- Gatekeepers. Going through a gatekeeper cut the chance of booking a meeting by 39% (Gong guide, 2024).
- Not published. No study we could verify gives absolute connect rates for mobiles, direct office lines and switchboards side by side.

Our own cold calls: 894 dials, 18 meetings
Across 8 recorded calling sessions between 15 July and 7 September 2026, Arnaud Renoux, Scalelist’s founder, made 894 dials and booked 18 meetings: about one meeting per 50 dials.
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Sessions with a dial log | 8, from 15 July to 7 September 2026 |
| Dials | 894 |
| Meetings booked | 18 |
| Dials per meeting | About 50 |
| Talk time per meeting (5 dialer sessions, 13 meetings) | About 14 minutes |
- Who was called. Four sessions called prospects in Australia. The others called Singapore, California, or a region the dialer did not record.
- Which numbers. Five of the eight sessions dialed mobile numbers only; the other three did not record the number type.
- How to read it. This is one experienced caller (75,000+ recorded cold calls over 11 years in sales), a narrow buyer profile and mostly mobile numbers. It is not comparable with platform averages built on thousands of reps, and single sessions ranged widely.
Popular cold calling statistics we left out
These numbers circulate on many stats pages. We could not trace them to a primary source, or the source says something different.
| Statistic you will see | What we found |
|---|---|
| “It takes 8 attempts to reach a prospect” | No primary study found. Cognism’s 2026 report says 1.55 calls on average. |
| “2% of cold calls book a meeting” | Cognism’s 2% to 3% counts conversations, not dials. Per dial, published rates work out to about 0.25% to 0.3%. |
| “80% of sales need 5 follow-ups” | Credited to a web page with no underlying study; the page now returns a 404. |
| “82% of buyers accept meetings from cold calls” | RAIN Group (2018) found 82% accept meetings at least sometimes from sellers who reach out, through any channel. |
| “Successful cold calls average 93 seconds” | 93 seconds was the average of all cold calls in Cognism’s 2025 report. |
| “Calling 4 to 5 PM is 71% more effective” | No primary source found; newer platform data peaks in the morning. |
| “0.3% of cold calls become appointments” | A 2011 study of 50 real estate agents calling consumers, not a B2B benchmark. |
How to use these numbers: what a realistic calling day looks like
A realistic day for an SDR on a phone-centric team is about 56 dials, three to seven connects and, at average rates, less than one meeting a week.
Take Maya Brooks, an SDR at Summit Ledger, a fictional payroll software company in Denver. She makes 56 dials a day, the phone-centric average from The Bridge Group. At the 30 to 40 dials an hour that Gong’s guide assumes, that is 90 minutes to 2 hours on the phone.

- Plan in weeks, not days. At Gong’s average rates, 280 dials a week books about 0.7 meetings. A day with no meeting is normal; a month with none is a signal.
- Compare like with like. Hold your conversation-to-meeting rate against a source that defines a conversation the same way: 4.6% of connects (Gong) or 12% of calls over a minute (Orum).
- Put the block where people answer. Mid-morning local time, and test Tuesday and Wednesday against your other days.
- Call each prospect up to three times. That is where 93% of conversations happen; past five attempts, the returns are small.
- Fix the list before the script. Mobiles connect 45% more often and front desks cost meetings, so a cold calling list with direct mobiles moves the top of the funnel more than a new opener.

FAQ
What is the average cold calling success rate?
About 2.7% of conversations book a meeting, according to Cognism’s 2026 report with WHAM data, up from 2.3% a year earlier. Other sources count differently: Gong’s average rep books a meeting on 4.6% of connects, and Orum’s users booked on 12% of calls lasting over a minute. Per dial, the rate is about 0.25% to 0.3%.
How many cold calls does it take to book a meeting?
About 370 to 400 for an average caller. Belkins measured roughly 370 dials per booked meeting across 175,000+ dials in 2025, and Gong’s 2024 data works out to about 402 for an average rep. Top-quartile reps in Gong’s data need about 45, because they connect more often and convert more of those connects.
What is a good cold call connect rate?
Anything above 5.4% of dials beats Gong’s average rep, and 13.3% puts you in Gong’s top quartile. If you count gatekeepers and wrong people as connects, compare with Belkins’ 9.9% instead. Lists heavy on mobile numbers should run higher: Nooks found mobiles connect 45% more often than other numbers.
What is the best time to make cold calls?
Mid-morning, local time. Gong’s connect rate peaks at 8% for calls placed at 10 AM, and Orum’s 2024 data also peaks at 10 AM. For days, Tuesday and Wednesday produced 44% of demos booked in ZoomInfo’s 1.4 million calls, though Cognism’s 2026 report ranks Thursday first. Test both on your own list.
How many cold calls should an SDR make per day?
About 56 on a phone-centric team. The Bridge Group’s 2025 survey of 351 B2B companies found phone-centric SDR teams average 56 dials and 4.6 quality conversations a day, against 28 dials on email-centric teams. At Gong’s average connect rate, 56 dials is about 3 connects a day.
Do mobile numbers get more answers than office lines?
Yes. Nooks analyzed nearly 3 million dials and found mobile numbers had a 45% higher connect rate than non-mobile numbers, and those conversations turned into meetings 18% more often. It did not publish absolute rates per number type, and no other study we could verify does either.
Where do these cold calling statistics come from?
From the publishers’ own reports, blogs and PDFs: Gong, Orum, Nooks, Belkins, Cognism with WHAM data, ZoomInfo, The Bridge Group and RAIN Group, plus our own dial logs. Most are vendor or agency data about their own users or reps, so each number carries its year, sample and definition. Last reviewed 28 September 2026.
