Data Enrichment: What It Is, How It Works, and How to Do It

How to Add Verified Emails to CSV Files Using Claude for Data Enrichment.

Contents

You have a spreadsheet of 1,000 contacts. You need their verified emails. The old way takes hours, copy names into a finder tool, download results, re-import everything.

This workflow cuts that to minutes. We uploaded a CSV of 1,000 US CEOs to Claude with the Scalelist MCP connected. Claude returned 893 verified emails in the same spreadsheet, with no manual work and without leaving the chat.

Here is exactly how to replicate it.

What Is Data Enrichment?

Data enrichment is the process of adding missing or incomplete information to an existing contact list or database. For B2B teams, this means adding verified email addresses, phone numbers, or company details to a list that only has partial information.

The result is a complete dataset ready for outreach, CRM import, or targeting.

What Data Enrichment Actually Adds

Enrichment is not one thing. It is a set of different lookups that happen to share a workflow. Knowing which one you need saves money, because vendors price them very differently.

TypeWhat it appendsTypical use
Contact enrichmentWork email, mobile number, job title, seniorityOutbound sequences and cold calling
Company enrichmentHeadcount, revenue band, industry, location, domainTerritory assignment and scoring
TechnographicSoftware the company runsCompetitive displacement and integration plays
IntentTopics the company is researchingPrioritising who to contact this week
SocialLinkedIn profile, company pageMultichannel sequencing
ValidationWhether an existing field is still trueReducing bounce rate on an old list

Most teams say “enrichment” when they mean the first row. Work emails and mobile numbers are the fields that decide whether a sequence connects, and they are also the fields that decay fastest.

Why Enriched Data Decays

A B2B contact record goes stale at roughly 25 to 30 percent per year, and the driver is job movement rather than anything the vendor did wrong. When someone changes company, three fields break at once: the work email, the employer, and often the title. The mobile number is the exception. It usually follows the person, which is why phone coverage holds its value longer than email coverage.

The practical consequence: enrichment is a subscription to freshness, not a one-time purchase. A list bought eighteen months ago and never refreshed is closer to a liability than an asset, because the bounces it generates damage the sending domain you use for everything else.

The Four Ways Enrichment Gets Done

1. Manual lookup

Someone searches for the contact and copies the details across. Accurate, and completely unscalable past a few dozen records. Still the right choice for a named-account list of twenty strategic targets.

2. CSV upload

You export a list, upload it to a provider, and download an enriched file. No engineering required, which is why it is the most common starting point. The weakness is that it is a snapshot: the moment the file is downloaded it begins going stale, and nothing updates your CRM.

3. API

Your system calls the provider directly and writes the result back. This is what turns enrichment from a task into a process, because it can run on a trigger such as a new form submission or a new CRM record. It needs development time once, then runs without anyone touching it. See our guides to the data enrichment API and the contact enrichment API.

4. Waterfall

Instead of asking one provider, you ask several in sequence and stop at the first one that returns a verified result. Coverage rises sharply because no single database has everyone. Cost control comes from the ordering: cheapest and most likely to hit goes first.

How to Judge Enrichment Quality

Vendors compete on a headline coverage number that is close to meaningless, because it describes their whole database rather than your list. These are the measures that survive contact with reality.

MetricWhat it meansWhat good looks like
Match rate on your listShare of your records that got a resultTest on 500 of your own rows, not a sample the vendor picks
Bounce rateShare of returned emails that fail on sendUnder 3 percent; under 2 percent for a verified tier
Mobile coverageShare of records with a reachable direct numberVaries hugely by region; test your actual territory
RecencyHow recently the record was confirmedA date on the record, not a vague “continuously updated”
Credit behaviourWhether you pay for missesYou should only be charged for verified results

Run the test before you sign anything. Take 500 rows you already know the answer for, send them through, and compare. A vendor that will not let you test on your own data is telling you something.

Where Enrichment Fits in Your Stack

There are three sensible places to put it, and most teams eventually use all three.

  • At the point of capture. A form gets submitted with an email address; enrichment fills in company, size and title so routing and scoring can happen immediately. This is where enrichment shortens speed-to-lead.
  • On a schedule against the CRM. A recurring job re-checks records that have not been touched in six months. This is the one that stops decay compounding. See our guide to CRM data enrichment.
  • At list build. You define the buyer you want and get back contacts already enriched, rather than building a list and enriching it as a second step.

Common Enrichment Mistakes

  • Enriching everything. Credits spent on records nobody will ever contact are simply wasted. Filter to the segment you actually sell to first.
  • Appending before cleaning. If the same company exists three times under three spellings, enrichment produces three enriched duplicates. Deduplicate first.
  • Overwriting fields a human set. Sales reps record things the database does not know. Write enriched values into their own fields and let a rule decide which wins.
  • Judging a vendor on database size. Total records is a marketing number. Match rate on your list is the only figure that predicts your outcome.
  • Treating it as a project. A one-time cleanup looks impressive for a quarter and then decays back. The refresh schedule is the actual deliverable.

What Do You Need to Set Up Data Enrichment with Claude?

You need two things: a Claude account and a Scalelist account.

Scalelist is a B2B email and phone number enrichment platform. It connects to Claude via MCP, the Model Context Protocol, which lets Claude call Scalelist’s tools directly from the chat.

Setup takes under two minutes:

  1. Log in to your Scalelist dashboard.
  2. Go to API in the left navigation panel.
  3. Click the blue “New Key” button to create your API key.
  4. In Claude, open Connectors from the left navigation.
  5. Click the + button and select “Add custom connector.”
  6. Name it Scalelist and paste the MCP URL.
  7. Add your API key and click Save.

The Scalelist MCP connector will appear in your connectors list. You are ready to enrich.

Note: Claude’s free plan allows one custom connector. If you already have others, you will need Claude Pro at $20 per month.

What CSV Format Does Your Data Enrichment Tool Need?

Your spreadsheet needs three columns at minimum:

  • First name
  • Last name
  • Company name OR company website

Use the website column if you have it. Domain names are more precise than company names. “Apple” could mean dozens of companies. “apple.com” means one.

No other columns are required. Claude reads your existing layout and adds email and email status columns to it.

How to Do Data Enrichment: Step-by-Step

Open a new Claude chat and upload your CSV or share your spreadsheet.

Give Claude this instruction: “Find all of the emails for every lead in this file. Put the data into a single spreadsheet with new columns for email and email status.”

Claude reads every row, batches the contacts, and sends them to Scalelist. Scalelist searches its database and verifies each email using SMTP checking. The results come back in the same spreadsheet with two new columns added.

The entire process runs without you leaving Claude.

What Results Can You Expect from B2B Data Enrichment?

We tested this on a list of 1,000 US CEOs. Here is what came back.

722 contacts received a valid email address. These are SMTP-verified and confirmed deliverable. They show in green in the spreadsheet.

171 contacts received a risky designation. An email was found but the mail server did not confirm delivery. They show in yellow. You decide whether to use them.

104 contacts returned not found. These cost zero credits. They show in red.

3 contacts hit a batch processing error. These can be rerun.

Total emails returned: 893 out of 1,000, an 89.3% find rate on a cold CEO list.

How Much Does Email Data Enrichment Cost?

Scalelist charges 1 credit per email found. There is no charge for contacts where no email is found.

Verification is included in each credit. You do not pay extra to find out whether an email is valid or risky.

For 1,000 CEO contacts, you pay for the 893 emails returned. The 104 not-found contacts cost nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the meaning of data enrichment?

Data enrichment means adding missing or incomplete data to an existing record. For B2B sales and marketing, this typically means adding verified emails, phone numbers, or firmographic details to a contact list.

What is an example of data enrichment?

Uploading a CSV of contacts with names and companies and using an enrichment tool to add verified email addresses. The result is a complete, outreach-ready list from what started as incomplete data.

How do you do data enrichment?

Connect Claude to Scalelist using the MCP connector. Upload your CSV to Claude. Prompt Claude to find emails and add them as new columns. Claude calls Scalelist, which searches its database and verifies each address. Results appear in your original spreadsheet.

What is the difference between valid and risky emails?

Valid emails passed real-time SMTP verification. The mail server confirmed the address exists and is deliverable. Risky emails were found in the database but the mail server did not confirm delivery. They may still deliver.

How much does email data enrichment cost with Scalelist?

One credit per email found. Emails not found cost zero. Email verification is included in each credit, no extra charge.

Conclusion

Data enrichment no longer requires exporting from one tool, uploading to another, and re-importing results. This workflow runs entirely inside Claude.

Upload your CSV. Ask Claude to find emails. Get back the same spreadsheet with verified emails and status labels added.

We tested it on 1,000 US CEOs. 89.3% of contacts returned a verified email, with zero manual research.
