Sales job titles fall into six levels: entry-level prospectors, reps who close or grow accounts, managers, directors, vice presidents and chief officers. The core title tells you the job; the words around it (senior, enterprise, regional, channel) tell you the scope.
Below: the 12 titles you will see most, how they rank, which titles mean the same job, and how to find the people behind them.
What are the main sales job titles?
The 12 main sales job titles are sales development representative (SDR), business development representative (BDR), account executive (AE), account manager (AM), sales engineer, sales operations manager, sales manager, director of sales, head of sales, VP of sales, chief sales officer (CSO) and chief revenue officer (CRO). They split by level, and by whether the person wins new customers or grows existing ones.
Some are far more common than others. In Scalelist’s people search, over 2.3 million US profiles carry the title account executive, a title also used in advertising, media and insurance. Only 3,679 carry chief sales officer (September 2026).
The sales hierarchy: titles by level
In a mid-size B2B company, sales titles stack in six levels, and each level manages the one below it.

- Entry: SDRs and BDRs book first meetings and hand them to AEs.
- Reps: AEs close new deals, AMs renew and expand customers, sales engineers win the technical evaluation.
- Managers: a sales manager coaches a team of reps and owns its quota.
- Directors: a director of sales runs a region, segment or product line through managers.
- VPs and heads: a VP of sales owns the plan and the budget. “Head of Sales” names a position, the top of the sales team, more than a level: at a startup it can be a director-level hire, at a large company a VP. Our Head of Sales vs Director of Sales guide covers the difference.
- Chief officers: a CSO or CRO sits on the executive team.
The 12 sales job titles and what each one owns
Each sales job title owns one part of the revenue process and is measured on it. Titles vary by company, so treat this as the common pattern, not a rule.
| Title | Level | Owns | Measured on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales development rep (SDR) | Entry | First meetings from outbound and inbound leads | Meetings held |
| Business development rep (BDR) | Entry | Same, often outbound only or a named territory | Meetings, pipeline created |
| Account executive (AE) | Rep | Deals from first meeting to signed contract | New bookings, win rate |
| Account manager (AM) | Rep | Renewals and expansion of existing customers | Revenue retained and grown |
| Sales engineer | Rep | Technical discovery, demos, proofs of concept | Technical wins |
| Sales operations manager | Rep or manager | CRM, territories, forecast data, comp admin | Forecast accuracy, data quality |
| Sales manager | Manager | A team of reps and its quota | Team attainment |
| Director of sales | Director | A region, segment or product line | Division bookings, forecast roll-up |
| Head of sales | Head | The sales function, or one unit of it | Bookings for what they run |
| VP of sales | VP | The sales plan, headcount and budget | Company bookings, cost of sales |
| Chief sales officer (CSO) | Chief | Execution across every sales team | Bookings, forecast accuracy |
| Chief revenue officer (CRO) | Chief | Sales, marketing and customer success revenue | Total revenue, retention |
SDR quotas are small and specific: the median is 10 first meetings held per month (The Bridge Group, 2025). Role pages go deeper on the SDR, account manager vs account executive, sales engineer vs solutions consultant, the chief sales officer and the chief revenue officer. If you are choosing between a sales seat and a customer-facing one, see customer success rep vs inside sales rep.
Titles that mean the same job (and creative sales titles)
Many sales titles are different names for the same job. The US occupation database O*NET lists district, regional and national sales manager, sales director, sales VP and sales supervisor under one occupation, sales managers (O*NET 11-2022).
| Standard title | Other titles for the same job |
|---|---|
| SDR | BDR, inside sales rep, sales development associate, market development rep |
| Account executive | Sales executive, territory manager, client partner, account director (agencies) |
| Account manager | Key account manager, relationship manager, client manager |
| Sales manager | Sales team lead, sales supervisor, regional or district sales manager |
| VP of sales | Head of sales, SVP of sales, sales VP |
| Sales engineer | Solutions engineer, solutions consultant, presales consultant |
Sales titles without the word “sales”: account executive, account manager, client partner, business development representative, solutions consultant, relationship manager.
Creative sales titles such as “growth partner” or “customer advocate” can soften a cold call, but they cost you elsewhere. Candidates search for standard titles, CRMs file odd titles under the wrong level, and buyers cannot tell who decides. If you use one, keep the standard title next to it: “Growth Partner (Account Executive)”.
How to read any sales job title
Read a sales title in four parts: level, segment, role and territory. That is enough to place almost any title by function and seniority.

- Function: all 12 titles belong to Sales. Sales operations may sit in Sales or in Revenue Operations; account management sometimes sits in Customer Success.
- Seniority: Scalelist’s people search uses ten levels: owner or founder, CXO, partner, VP, head, director, manager, senior, entry, intern. Head sits between VP and director.
- Ambiguous titles: an “enterprise sales manager” can be a people manager or a closer who sells to enterprise accounts. Check whether anyone reports to them.
What sales teams care about when you sell to them
Each level buys for a different reason, so match the message to the title.
- Reps (SDR, AE, AM): more conversations per hour, fewer wrong numbers, less data entry.
- Managers and directors: ramp time for new hires, activity their reps actually complete, clean pipeline for the forecast call.
- VPs, CSOs and CROs: pipeline coverage, cost per meeting, a forecast they can defend. Above a spending threshold, the CFO signs too; our CFO email list guide covers that side.
How to find and reach people by sales job title
Describe the title, industry and company size in one sentence in Scalelist’s Lead Finder. It shows what it understood and how many people match, for free, before you reveal any contact.
On 28 September 2026 that sentence matched 3,577 US profiles. Each lead costs 1 credit, each email found 1 credit and each mobile found 20; nothing found costs nothing. Emails come back Valid or Risky, and the list is current the week you use it, which is why we build rather than buy email lists.
The same method works for any role in our lead list guide. More openers are in our cold call openers.
Describe the sales leaders you sell to and see how many match before you spend a credit.

What is the hierarchy of sales job titles?
From entry level up: SDR or BDR, then account executive or account manager, then sales manager, director of sales, head of sales or VP of sales, and finally chief sales officer or chief revenue officer. Small companies skip levels; a 30-person startup may have reps reporting straight to a head of sales.
What is the highest title in sales?
Chief revenue officer or chief sales officer. A CRO usually owns sales, marketing and customer success revenue; a CSO owns the sales teams only. Where neither exists, the VP of sales or head of sales is the top sales job and reports to the CEO.
What is the difference between an SDR and a BDR?
Often nothing: many companies use the titles for the same entry-level job, booking first meetings for account executives. Where both exist, SDRs usually work inbound leads and BDRs prospect outbound or into a named territory. Check the job description, not the acronym.
What are other names for a sales manager?
Sales team lead, sales supervisor, and district, regional or national sales manager. O*NET files sales director and sales VP under the same occupation, sales managers (11-2022). At some companies, especially outside the US, “sales manager” is an individual closer, so check who reports to them.
What are sales job titles without the word “sales”?
Account executive, account manager, client partner, business development representative, solutions consultant and relationship manager. They describe the same selling jobs; some companies prefer them for customer-facing roles.
Should you use creative sales titles?
Rarely. Titles like “growth partner” can make a cold call feel less like a pitch, but candidates, CRMs and buyers all read standard titles. If you use a creative title, pair it with the standard one, for example “Growth Partner (Account Executive)”, on your profile and email signature.
