A head of channel sales builds the revenue a company wins through partners instead of its own sales reps: resellers, distributors, managed service providers (MSPs), system integrators and referral partners. The job is to pick the right partners, make selling your product worth their time, and keep them from colliding with your direct sales team.
This page covers what the role owns, how it differs from channel managers and direct sales leaders, the KPIs, what the role looks for when buying, and how to find and reach one.
What does a head of channel sales do?
A head of channel sales is the leader accountable for indirect revenue: the deals partners source and close, or help close, on the company’s behalf. They decide which kinds of partners to recruit, design the program that pays and trains them, and set the quota and forecast for the channel.
The role is common in software, cybersecurity and IT services, where resellers and MSPs already own the customer relationship: 500 of the 1,268 US channel sales leaders Scalelist matches work in those three industries. Unlike a direct sales leader, a head of channel sales manages partners they cannot hire, fire or pay a salary to. Everything runs on margin, incentives and trust.
Head of channel sales responsibilities
- Partner strategy. Define the ideal partner profile: value-added resellers (VARs), MSPs, distributors, system integrators or referral partners, and in which markets.
- Recruitment and onboarding. Build the pipeline of partners to sign, negotiate agreements and get each new partner to a first deal.
- Program design. Set partner tiers, margins or commissions, deal registration rules and market development funds (MDF).
- Enablement. Give partners training, sales playbooks, demo access and co-branded material.
- Rules of engagement. Decide which accounts belong to partners and which to direct sales, and settle channel conflict when both chase the same deal.
- Forecast and systems. Own the channel forecast and the partner relationship management (PRM) system or partner portal.
How the role differs from other channel and sales leaders
Most confusion comes from titles one level down, or from direct sales leaders with a similar scope.

- Channel sales manager vs head of channel sales. A channel sales manager, also called a channel account manager, runs a set of partners day to day: joint account plans, pipeline reviews, deal support. The head designs the program all those managers run. Scalelist matches 2,803 US channel sales managers against 395 heads of channel sales.
- Partner sales manager. Often the same job as a channel sales manager under a different name. At software companies it can also mean co-selling with technology or cloud partners rather than resellers.
- Director of channel or partner sales. Usually the same seat as the head at a company with formal grades.
- Head of sales and head of field sales. Both lead direct sellers, who work their own territories and hit their own quotas. The channel leader is their peer, and the two must agree who owns which accounts. See how head of sales and director of sales titles compare.

Where the role sits in the org
The role usually reports to the chief revenue officer or the VP of sales, next to the leader of direct sales.

At some companies the role reports to a VP of partnerships or alliances who also owns technology partnerships and marketplaces. For how revenue leaders above the role divide the work, see CRO vs CSO.
KPIs the role owns
| KPI | What it measures |
|---|---|
| Channel-sourced revenue | Revenue from deals partners found and closed |
| Partner-influenced revenue | Direct deals where a partner helped |
| Active partner rate | Share of signed partners with a deal in the period |
| Time to first deal | How long a new partner takes to sell |
| Deal registrations and win rate | Partner pipeline volume and quality |
| Cost of the channel | Margins, incentives and MDF against channel revenue |
| Partner retention | Partners who stay active year over year |
What channel leaders care about when buying
They buy tools and services that recruit better partners faster and get them selling sooner.
- Partner recruitment. Finding the right reseller or MSP owners is the first bottleneck. A sentence such as “Owners of US managed service providers with 11 to 200 employees” in a lead finder builds that list.
- Partner activation. PRM systems, portals, training platforms and co-marketing tools, judged on how many partners reach a first deal.
- Pipeline visibility. Deal registration and forecasting that shows partner pipeline next to direct pipeline in the CRM.
- Channel conflict. Anything that makes account ownership clear between partners and direct reps.
How to find and reach a head of channel sales
Describe the leaders in one sentence in Scalelist’s Lead Finder, an AI lead finder. “Heads, directors and VPs of channel sales at US software, IT services and cybersecurity companies” matched 500 people on 28 September 2026. Include all three titles; the same job is often called director or VP.
Sizing the search is free. You pay 1 credit per lead found, 1 per email found and 20 per mobile found, and nothing for a miss. The same method works for any leader on the buying side, from channel chiefs to finance leaders on a CFO email list; our guide to building a B2B email list explains why a fresh build beats a bought file.

FAQ
What does a head of channel sales do?
A head of channel sales builds and runs the partner program that sells the company’s product: recruiting resellers, MSPs and other partners, designing tiers and incentives, training them and setting channel quotas. They are measured on revenue that partners source or help close, and on how many signed partners actually sell.
What is the difference between a head of channel sales and a channel sales manager?
The head owns the whole channel: strategy, program, budget and the channel forecast. A channel sales manager runs a portfolio of partners inside that program, working their pipeline and supporting their deals. Channel sales managers usually report to the head of channel sales or to a regional channel director.
Is a partner sales manager the same as a channel sales manager?
Often, yes. Both manage a set of partners and are measured on the revenue those partners bring. Some software companies use partner sales manager for co-selling with technology and cloud partners, and channel sales manager for resellers and distributors.
Who does a head of channel sales report to?
Usually the chief revenue officer or the VP of sales, as a peer of the head of direct sales. At companies with a partnerships organization, the role can report to a VP of partnerships or alliances instead.
What is channel conflict?
Channel conflict happens when a partner and the company’s own sales team pursue the same customer, or when partners undercut each other. Heads of channel sales prevent it with deal registration, clear account ownership rules and compensation that does not punish direct reps when a partner closes a deal in their territory.
What is the difference between channel sales and direct sales?
In direct sales, the company’s own reps find and close customers. In channel sales, partners such as resellers, distributors and MSPs sell to customers and earn a margin or commission. Many software and IT companies run both, which is why the head of channel sales and the head of direct sales must agree on who owns which accounts.
