VP of sales vs chief sales officer: what changes at the C-suite

VP of sales vs chief sales officer thumbnail: about 40 US VPs of sales for every chief sales officer, and how their scope differs

Contents

A VP of sales runs the sales team and this year’s number. A chief sales officer (CSO) sits on the executive team and owns how the company sells: which segments, which channels, what capacity, and which sales leaders run each team. The VP answers for the quarter; the CSO answers for the multi-year plan.

The two titles are far from evenly spread. Scalelist’s Lead Finder matches over 145,000 US VPs of sales and over 3,600 chief sales officers (September 2026), about 40 to 1. And the CSO title is not mainly a big-company title: 65% of US chief sales officers with a known company size work at companies of 200 employees or fewer.

What is the difference between a VP of sales and a chief sales officer?

A VP of sales is an operator: they hire and coach sales managers, run the forecast and deliver bookings against the annual plan. A chief sales officer is an executive: they decide which markets, segments and channels the company sells through, and represent sales to the CEO and board.

Where both exist, the VP of sales reports to the CSO. Where only one exists, the top sales leader’s title depends more on company size and habit than on scope. For the CSO role on its own, read what a chief sales officer does.

VP of sales vs chief sales officer at a glance

The simplest test: the VP of sales is judged on bookings against quota; the CSO is judged on revenue growth and what it costs to sell.

If the person is judged on bookings against quota, they do the VP of sales job, whatever the title.
VP of sales Chief sales officer
Time horizon This quarter and this year The multi-year commercial plan
Owns The sales team, forecast and process Sales strategy, segments, channels, sales leaders
Measured on Bookings vs quota, win rate, pipeline coverage Revenue growth, cost of sales, forecast accuracy
Reports to CSO, CRO or CEO CEO
Manages Sales directors and managers VPs of sales, channel sales and enablement
Budget Headcount, commissions, sales tools Capacity plan, pricing input, new markets
Next role CSO, CRO or general manager CRO, COO or CEO

A chief revenue officer adds marketing and often customer success to the CSO’s scope; the full comparison is in CRO vs CSO. The same logic answers CRO vs VP of sales: the VP of sales runs one team inside the CRO’s organization. One level down, see head of sales vs director of sales.

Where do a VP of sales and a chief sales officer sit in the org?

A chief sales officer reports to the CEO. The VP of sales reports to the CSO when there is one, and otherwise to the CEO or a chief revenue officer.

Without a CSO, the VP of sales moves up one layer and reports to the CEO or a chief revenue officer.

In a larger sales organization, the layer under the CSO splits by job. Regional or segment VPs of sales carry quota. A VP of channel sales runs partners and resellers (see the head of channel sales role). A VP or director of sales enablement runs onboarding, training and sales content (see the head of sales enablement).

Which companies have a chief sales officer?

Chief sales officers are more concentrated at small companies than VPs of sales are. At 1,000 employees and above, the VP title is proportionally more common.

Bar chart of chief sales officers vs VPs of sales by company size: 65% vs 56% at 200 or fewer employees, 18% vs 19% at 201 to 1,000, 17% vs 25% at 1,001 or more
Two in three US chief sales officers work at companies of 200 or fewer: read the title together with company size.

At a 30-person company, “chief sales officer” often means the founder or first sales leader with a C-level title, doing the job a VP or head of sales does elsewhere. So read the title together with company size:

  • Under 200 employees: treat a CSO like a hands-on head of sales who still joins deals.
  • Over 1,000 employees: expect the CSO to set direction and hand evaluations to a VP of sales or sales operations.

KPIs: what each role answers for

A VP of sales answers for the current year’s execution; a CSO answers for whether the sales model will still work in three years.

  • VP of sales: bookings against quota, pipeline coverage, win rate, average deal size, sales cycle length, and how quickly new reps ramp.
  • Chief sales officer: revenue growth, share of target segments, cost of sales as a share of revenue, sales capacity against the hiring plan, and company-level forecast accuracy.

What each cares about when buying

A VP of sales buys what the team will use tomorrow; a CSO signs what changes the sales model.

  • VP of sales: rep productivity, pipeline for this quarter, time to ramp. Show a result inside one quarter.
  • Chief sales officer: capacity, cost of sales, entry into new segments. Show the effect on the plan, and expect finance in the room: reach the CFOs at the same accounts early.

Hi Mark, it's Dana Kim from Crestline Payments. You started at Harbor Industrial in August, so I'll keep it short: are you keeping the territory plan you inherited, or rebuilding it?

It works because every new sales leader has an opinion on the plan they inherited, and the question costs nothing to answer.

FAQ

Is a chief sales officer higher than a VP of sales?

Yes, in the same company. A chief sales officer is a C-level executive who reports to the CEO, and VPs of sales report to the CSO where both roles exist. Across companies the comparison is weaker: a CSO at a 20-person startup may run a smaller team than a VP of sales at a large enterprise.

What is the difference between a chief sales officer and a chief revenue officer?

A chief sales officer owns the sales function: strategy, segments, channels and the sales leaders. A chief revenue officer usually owns every revenue team, which adds marketing and often customer success, renewals and revenue operations. Where a company has a CRO, the top sales leader usually reports to the CRO rather than holding a separate C-level seat.

Does a company need both a VP of sales and a chief sales officer?

Rarely before several sales teams exist. A single sales team needs one leader, usually a VP or head of sales reporting to the CEO. A CSO starts to make sense when there are several VPs of sales, by region, segment or channel, who need one executive to set direction and allocate capacity between them.

Can a VP of sales become a chief sales officer?

Yes, it is the most common path. The step up requires moving from running this year’s number to planning the sales model: segments, channels, capacity and cost of sales. VPs who have run more than one team, built a forecast the board trusted and worked closely with finance make the move most easily.

What is the difference between a head of sales and a VP of sales?

Mostly company size. Head of sales is common at startups and smaller companies for the first senior sales leader, often hands-on with deals. VP of sales usually means a larger team with managers under it and a formal quota plan. Some companies use the two titles for the same job.
